 U.S. Study Results

Benchmark Data So Corporations Can Compare

In late 2001 and early 2002, the National Benchmark Study, Measuring the Business Value of Corporate Philanthropy was accomplished. The findings of this study, which involved research with three stakeholder segments: employees, customers, and shareholders, were first reported publicly in May 2002. The project was made possible as a result of funding by corporate members of the Council on Foundations and in-kind service contributions from Walker Information.

As part of its biannual national employee loyalty studies, Walker Information released new findings about volunteerism and philanthropy in the workplace as reported and perceived by U.S. workers in September 2003.

For background, the 2001-2002 national philanthropy benchmark study involved recruiting two separate survey samples. The first, made up of 1,273 adults ages 18 and older, was drawn from the 48 lower states. It consisted of persons known to work for corporations with 2,500 or more employees. Individuals employed in non-profit or government organizations were excluded. These persons were used in both the employee and customer phases of the project. The second survey sample, also drawn from the 48 lower states, included 426 persons 21 years or older who had personally invested in individual stocks (not stock funds or bonds). These persons were interviewed for the shareholder phase.

The 2003 Walker Loyalty Report for Loyalty in the Workplace involved interviewing 2,400 persons, 18 years or older, working for business, non-profit, and government organizations in the lower 48 states with at least 50 employees. The data was collected in the summer of 2003.
